What is DBA?

 

Any company has a lot of information to handle that relates to its accounts, sales, finances, stocks and the like. This is of immense value to a company and the way it is accessed, utilized, stored and retrieved directly influences the competence and growth of the company. For the purpose of safety and proper organization, the data is stored in RDBMS or simply a Database. All users who need the information connect to the database for putting /getting / updating the data they want to. Database Administration aims to keep these critical databases in the pink of their health and available always to ensure a proper dispensation of data relating to individual users in a safe and secure manner.

 

Since most of the big companies have their offices (and hence users) spread out across the globe, the databases to which users need to connect, need to be available 24x7 and require a good deal of maintenance to keep them healthy. The personnel who carry out this activity of maintenance, user administration along with other related areas such as system administration and networking, are called Database Administrators or simply DBAs.

 

A typical DBA is a perfectionist and has an eye for detail. He can even be termed by his detractors as nosy, fidgety, withdrawn and even grumpy. But a DBA enjoys his job if he is cut out for it and derives a high level of self actualization from his calling. He even enjoys life and has a sense of humor, too!

 

DBA as a career option

 

As you may have by now understood that the job of a DBA involves a high level of responsibility and risk, it can be safely said that the job of Database Administrator is not for everyone.

 

Typically, programmers and developers consider shifting over to the DBA realm after having put in more than 5 years of service in their line, in view of the skills and attitude expected from a person of DBA's standing.

 

Pay wise, it can be safely assumed that DBAs are some of the best paid professionals in the IT sector.

 

The success of a DBA depends upon how well he understands the process and information flow and the tools at his command. He will need to communicate with developers, programmers and even network and system administrators and therefore will be required to understand and demonstrate a working knowledge of all these skills besides being a specialist in the DBA activities (and never underestimate the importance of Communicative ability for a DBA). Once he understands the big picture and proves his mettle within the organization, a DBA's worth does not go unnoticed. He eventually becomes almost indispensable within the organization and commands a lot of influence not only by virtue of his knowledge but also by his standing as a DBA.

Requisites for the post of Trainee Database Administrators

 

Experienced or Fresh candidates with Excellent Communication and Interpersonal skills holding any one of the following qualifications

 

People who have experience in other areas of IT and are planning to shift to Database Administration are also eligible.

Progression as a DBA at Wissen

 

 

Your career path at Wissen will basically have five phases:

 

 

0.         External Training

 

1.         Induction and HR Training and Evaluation

 

2.         Internship in L2 Support Team

 

3.         Full member of L2 Support Team

 

4.         Upgrade to L3 Support Team

 

 

External Training

Once selected, you will have to undergo External Training for Database Administration and primary training in UNIX. Company will pay for this training. You will be evaluated on the basis of your grasp of what has been taught in the external training before you go into the next phase of internal training.

 

 

Induction and HR Training and Evaluation

Once the earlier stage is cleared, you will go through a rigorous program of internal training that includes among others HR and Security Policies, specifics of DBA methodologies as applicable to the client environment. You will be tested on ALL the topics you have been trained in and clearing these papers is a must to qualify for the next phase.

 

 

Internship in L2 Support Team

Once your training and induction is done, you will become a member of the L2 Support Team. Here you will be exposed to the environments of all the individual functions of the client and get to work on several types of databases. You will also learn how to interact with customers and resolve database issues among others. Your performance here will be closely watched and evaluated.

There will be a Probation period of 6 months after you join the L2 Support Team.

 

Full-fledged member of L2 Support Team

In this phase you will work as a full-fledged member of the L2 Support Team doing Standard Repeatable Activities (SRAs) on databases and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Your acumen, attitude and stamina will be assessed here. Once you are counted as an expert you are all set to move to the L3 Support Team.

 

Upgrade to L3 Support Team

Once your stint with the L2 Support Team is done, you will be taken into the L3 Team where you will start working on more and more complex tasks and become the full scale DBA that you were meant to be. This is when you will start making worthwhile contribution to yourself, to the company and to the client.

 

Expect this phase to arrive around 1 1/2  to 2 years of your joining.

Salary Structure

 

We have a performance-linked salary structure. Though the salary hike/review would be identical for all the candidates, the variable component that makes the most important difference would be based on the credits you earn through Monthly Performance Score Card which records your progress and contribution.

 

 

Selection Procedure

                                     

We are sure you can appreciate the efforts put in by the company in building you up. Efforts of a similar scale are being deployed while selecting the candidates. In order to ensure efficiency and also effectiveness of our selection process, we need to ensure that casual walkers do not deprive the genuinely interested candidates of their well deserved opportunity.

 

Please understand that it is not our intention to inconvenience you in anyway but only to filter out the non-serious candidates that we are taking these measures.

 

The normal recruitment procedure for freshers to the entry level position is as follows:

 

Round I - Screening Test

Testing for a fair knowledge of technical concepts, English language skills, reasoning and numerical ability.

 

A Screening test would be conducted on Sunday, 27th July 2008 between 10 AM and 3 PM at Kasturba Gandhi Degree & PG College for Women, West Marredpally, Secunderabad. For appearing in the screening test, you need to register yourself by paying Rs.100/- (Rupees One Hundred Only).

Non-Local candidates can get themselves registered at the Venue - Kasturba Gandhi Degree & PG College for Women,   West Marredpally, Secunderabad on the day of the test - Sunday, 27th July 2008 between 10 AM and 3 PM. However, we strongly recommend that you register yourself in advance so that you will be allotted the time-slot for the test and you would not have to wait for long.

 

 

Round II - Group Discussion

 

Testing the Team play, language and analyzing abilities.

 

The candidates selected in the screening test will have to appear for the Group Discussion. The topic for the group discussion will be announced by the panel just before the start of the Group Discussion Round.

 

The time slots for the Group Discussion would be displayed along with the results of the Screening Test.

 

 

Round III - Technical & HR round

 

The candidates who get selected to this stage will have to deposit Rs.15,000 (Rupees Fifteen Thousand Only), before appearing for the Interview. Again, this is not to inconvenience you in any way but to make sure you would not throw away a grand career after having deprived someone else of his/her fair chance. This would be used for your basic training when you get selected and join the company. In case you pay up, get selected and then decide to forego your option of joining the company, you stand to lose this deposit. However, if you are not selected for the next level of selection procedure, this amount would be refunded. You will agree this is a fair approach.

 

o        If you do not make it to the next round this amount will be paid back to you after the results are announced.

o        If selected, the amount would be utilized towards the fee for external training in Database Administration.

o        If selected and you do not join after the selection, you will have to forego the amount.

 

Interview will be based on the learning mentioned on respective CVs. Candidate's potential to be placed in the team - commitment, sincerity, and employability are the criteria for the final selection.

 

Candidate then meets with the CEO  & COO and the decision to extend the offer is made based on the overall performance.

FAQ:

 

Why a commitment of 3 years?

We are sure you will appreciate the fact that there is a lot of training involved in the making of a DBA. To start from scratch and arrive at the point where others would normally be five years later, takes a lot of effort from the company. It would be fair to assume that in the first one and a half years, you will be taking from the company without giving anything in return. For the company the recover the training expenses, you would have to put in a service of at least two years after you get trained. Remember, you are starting from the scratch and it is in your interest as well to stick to the company and grow within the company before starting to sell your skills.

 

Why registration?

Uncomfortable topic as it is, it needs to be addressed - fairly and squarely. We have had candidates making it to final stage of interview and go back on the commitment and tell us on our faces that they had come just for the heck of attending the interview. We are sure, had you known what it is to be without a job, you would jump at the offer and go for it. At this time, the onus on the management is not only to ensure an efficient and effective recruitment program but also see to it that a fair chance is given to the persons who are genuinely interested in joining.

 

Am I expected to work in the Night Shifts?

Yes. You will agree that the job of a DBA puts him/her in charge of situations that may occur without warning at any time. This requires the DBA to be available 24x7. We offer support to our clients on a 24x7 and need personnel on this basis.

 

 

Do I have to pay any money other than the registration fee and the Training Fee?

 

No, you are not required to pay any amount other than the following:

There will be a Training Fee Reimbursement of up to Rs.5,000/- in a year. The guidelines:
